OmbrelloniEtruscan Coast

Sun Fun
[Daniela Scala]

The Etruscan Coast stretches from Livorno in the North to Piombino in the South. An area rich in ancient Etruscan cities and remains. The capital city of this area, Livorno, is Tuscany's major port and one of the most important in Italy. The beautiful Terrazza Mascagni overlooking the sea, the Giovanni Fattori Museum and the Venezia Nuova district are all well worth a visit. About 20 Kms South of Livorno, the town of Castiglioncello became fashionable in the late 1800’s when a circle of painters of the ‘macchiaioli’ school came looking for inspiration in these wildly beautiful natural surroundings. For five years the town has been awarded the "blue flag" for the quality of its sea and tourist services. Between July and August Castiglioncello and some nerby towns also host an interesting performing arts festival (more info on armunia.it). Further South, between Rosignano and Vada, there lies a 4 Km stretch of dazzling white sands: an absolute must for sunbathing enthusiasts! Most of the beach here is public and without facilities, although there is a parking fee. Other popular resorts along the Etruscan Coast are (North to South) Quercianella, Marina di Cecina, Marina di Bibbona, Donoratico, San Vincenzo and Baratti, where you shouldn't miss the well preserved Etruscan necropolis of Populonia and the nearby archaeological park (please visit www.parchivaldicornia.it for further details).

How to get there:
4by train: change trains in Pisa or Livorno. The journey is about 2 hours.
4by car: Firenze-Pisa-Livorno motorway to Rosignano for Castiglioncello; for San Vincenzo continue South on the Aurelia main road.
