Three weeks of events to celebrate
Florentine Genius
[
]

Florence is blessed with an additional asset: in other words the many men of genius who have contributed towards its glorious past. This is the reason behind a new and most important annual appointment called Florentine genius, which aims to bring Florence and its surrounding areas to the attention of the masses. The idea is to promote the city’s dynamic economic and cultural image as well as exploit its extraordinary traditions, starting off by recalling the genius of the great men who helped to make the past of the entire province so glorious, while also emphasising the economic and cultural greatness of the present.
The week dedicated to Florentine genius will be held between May 15th and June 7th.
Hoteliers are proposing special stay for 4 nights, pay for 3 packages, restaurants are offering menus inspired by Florentine genius, while the air companies that fly into Florence (Alitalia, Meridiana, Air France and Lufthansa) are organising what they call brilliant fares especially for this initiative.
Leonardo will be starring at Vinci, with the inauguration of the new optical section in the Leonardo Museum and an international study convention. Certaldo will celebrate Boccaccio with a convention and a special evening-event in the mediaeval village. Talks on Machiavelli are being organised at San Casciano as well as an important convention on politics, while other men of genius are being celebrated elsewhere, like Giovanni della Casa at Borgo San Lorenzo and Petrarch at Incisa.
Events in Florence itself include the re-opening of the House of Dante after its restoration, with many other intitiatives centred around the future and new technology, among them a series of international conventions that covering both telephonic and banking systems. A new city street, Via del Fiorino (the Road of the Florin) will be inaugurated in the University area of Novoli. Another great event is the Ferragamo fashion parade that will be held in the splendid setting of Piazza Santa Trinita. The programme for the 3 weeks is studded with concerts, performances, readings, food tastings and guided visits dedicated to crafts.
