Before coming to Italy, students from outside the European Community, should request a Student Visa in their home country. You then need to apply for a Residence Permit (permesso di soggiorno) by registering with the Police Headquarters within 8 working days of your arrival in Italy. You need to go armed with plenty of patience as you may have to wait in a queue for some time.
The Florence Police Headquarters or Questura is located in Via Zara, 2 (tel.055.49771), near Piazza San Marco, where you need to submit the following documents:
- four passport-size photos of yourself, each signed along the side;
- proof of solvency (a front/back photocopy of your credit card or travellers checks);
- photocopies of the photo page and of the Italian visa page of your passport; you can find photo booths at the train station or near the post office.
- a 14,62 euro tax stamp (marca da bollo) which you can buy at any tobacconist's;
- a letter from your School or University accepting you in a study programme;
- a filled-in application form that you can obtain from the Questura;
- proof of health insurance valid for the length of your expected stay in Italy, which may be:
* a photocopy of your private health insurance covering all medical costs;
* forms E111, E106, E107, E109, E110 from another EC country;
* a receipt of your payment to an Italian Insurance company which you can make at any Post Office. The deposit slip (bollettino) should be made payable to: Agenzia Generale di Roma INA ASSITALIA, Via del Tritone n° 181 on postal account (conto corrente) number 71270003. You will have to pay 38,74 euro for up to 6 months or 77,47 euro for 12 months.
Remember that wherever photocopies are required you should also bring the original documents with you in order to allow officials to counter-check their conformity.
If you need renew your Residence Permit you have to produce all the above documents again one month prior to the expiry date, including evidence of the renewal of your health insurance and your present Residence Permit.
We warmly advise you to prepare as many of these documents as possible before you arrive in order to save time when you submit them. That way you will probably be issued with a permit within a week.
